State-of-the-Art Integrated Treatment Center

What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.

What is a Psychiatrist?

A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D.) who specializes in the mental health of his/her patients. These mental health issues could include substance abuse disorders, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, or even hearing “voices” in one’s head. Psychiatrists work to treat these mental health issues using a variety of different treatments, many of which are offered here at the CIIT Medical Center.

Dr. James Halper is the CIIT Medical Center’s Psychiatrist.

What Treatments Do Psychiatrists Use?

A Psychiatrist has an arsenal of treatments at his/her disposal. These include, but are not limited to, psychotherapy, medications, psychosocial interventions and other treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) or NeuroFeedback

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a treatment that involves forming a relationship between the Psychiatrist (therapist) and the patient. It can be used to treat symptoms that are negatively affecting a patient, such as anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts. Depending on each patient’s unique symptoms, psychotherapy can last a few sessions or it can last many sessions over a long period of time.

Medications can be prescribed by a psychiatrist just like a doctor in internal medicine. These medications can help correct imbalances in the body that are involved in some mental health issues. Some example medications can be: Antidepressants (Depression, Panic Disorder, Anxiety), Antipsychotics (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), Sedatives (Anxiety, Insomnia), or Mood Stabilizers.

What is the Difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?

A Psychiatrist differs from a Psychologist in that a Psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D.) and is able to prescribe medications for psychological conditions. A Psychologist usually holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) or Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D) and focuses extensively on psychotherapy and interventions on patients with emotional and mental health conditions.

The CIIT Center has both a Psychiatrist – Dr. James Halper – and a Psychologist – Dr. Robert Goldman – on staff.
