Neurofeedback

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback (also called EEG Biofeedback) is a gradual learning process by which the brain learns to function more efficiently. Neurofeedback addresses issues of brain dysregulation such as Depression, Anxiety, Migraines, Headaches, Attention Deficit Disorder, Sleep disorders, and more. It can also help treat conditions such as Seizures, Bipolar Disorder, Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury, and developmental disabilities.

How does Neurofeedback work?

Neurofeedback is non-invasive and painless. To begin, electrodes are applied to specific points on your scalp based on results from a Brain Map (QEEG) conducted prior to beginning your first neurofeedback. These electrodes record electrical brain activity while you’re watching a movie. If your brain activity is working as intended, the movie will keep playing. However, if your brain activity deviates or is not working as intended, the movie will pause momentarily until the activity is corrected. Over time, this reward system will teach the brain to function more efficiently and may help treat symptoms of the above-mentioned issues.

As a basic example – a patient with ADHD is watching a movie. If the patient continues to maintain focus on the movie (reflected in brain activity), the movie will keep playing. However, if the patient loses focus on the movie (physically or mentally), the movie will stop playing until the patient refocuses. By rewarding the patient when he/she focuses on the movie, he/she may exhibit less symptoms of his/her ADHD.

How often do I need Neurofeedback?

Frequency of Neurofeedback is determined by our doctors and varies between patients. However, most patients receive 20-30 sessions of Neurofeedback at a rate of 1-3 sessions per week.

Is Neurofeedback right for me?

If you or someone you know suffers from chronic headaches/migraines, has had a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI), has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD), has Autism, or any other neurological issues, Neurofeedback may be beneficial. Please call us at 516-243-8660 to learn more.

How does the process begin?

Call us at 516-243-8600 to set up an appointment with us. You will meet with our doctors and have a Brain Map conducted on you. The Brain Map will determine specific areas of your brain that the Neurofeedback treatment will focus on.
