MindFIT – Dr. Robert Goldman

What is MindFIT with Dr. Robert Goldman

Free your mind and the rest will follow.

The mission of the center is to promote wellness and treat illness with innovative and integrative approaches to symptomology so that we can learn from the ailment and heal. Contrary to this view, our culture is very reactive. When it comes to mental health, we wait for anxiety to strike and mask the symptoms with a pill rather than seeking to understand its underlying cause. The opportunity for growth is lost. I am reminded of the story told by Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski about how a lobster needs to feel discomfort to get a new shell. See, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aDXM5H-Fuw.

To further the mission of the Center, we launched MindFIT, an 8-week program, that combines exercise with psychology to help those who encounter daily stressors (anyone) by creating opportunities for growth through exercise. The group is for all level of fitness abilities and for ages 10 and up. The lessons learned at MindFIT are then generalized to daily life. Our group was led by myself and Level 2 CrossFit Coach Joey Adduci (owner of CrossFit Commack, http://www.crossfitcommack.com). As in all CrossFIT classes, there was a Workout of the Day (WOD), which involved pushups and sit-ups. The Mindset of the Day (MOD) was open-mindedness. According to Frank Zappa (although this is debatable), “Your mind is like a parachute; it does not work unless it is open.”

We used Zappa’s metaphor to approach the WOD. Remember the lyrics, “Free your mind and the rest will follow.”? If you don’t, check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7iQbBbMAFE. We explored the different emotions between close- mindedness and open-mindedness. From a survivalist perspective, fear and worry is what protected us. Now it cripples us. The willingness to begin the MindFIT program requires an open-minded approach.

The lessons learned at MindFit are generalized throughout the week. Research has shown that when the brain learns a new skill, neural networks are being formed. For them to grow and a habit to be formed it must be practiced. Please visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KLPxDtMqe8 for more information. We provided each participant with a journal and asked them to log the number of pushups and sit-ups for the week. Additionally, they are asked to journal their open-minded approach to various tasks throughout the week and its consequences.

I am excited and open-minded about the launch of the MindFIT, the only such program in the nation. I will continue to blog about the lessons learned throughout the week. However, if you really want to know more come join us at CIIT. New classes are beginning soon. For more information, call 516-243-8660 and visit us at www.theciitcenter.com.
